From UNC Basketball Update - Comments on Memphis

From UNC Basketball Update
News and game summaries from a life-long North Carolina Basketball fan(atic)

Heels Drop to No. 8 in Both Polls

Ouch. Heels go from 5th to 8th. Let's take a look at a few of the teams in front of us.

First of course is Ohio State. They are #1 after beating Wisconsin. We beat them earlier in the year, but they were without Oden. Speaking of Wisconsin, they lost their last two games and fell three spots in the polls. UNC lost to an extremely hot Maryland team and dropped three spots. #5 Florida has lost 2 of 3 and only fell two spots.

The Memphis Tigers are ahead of us at #6. I saw just a little bit of their game this weekend and they looked pretty sharp. However, their strength of schedule is close to 100!! I'm sorry, no team should be in the top 10 with that weak of a schedule. It is obvious the pollsters weight the number of losses very heavily and if you have a cream puff schedule, you will likely be ranked higher. And did I mention that one of the three Memphis losses was against Arizona. You know the team we drubbed in Tucson!

Memphis is drawing some benefits from playing in the CUSA.

As I mentioned in an earlier comment, Memphis is being rewarded for playing in the CUSA, and a team like Tennessee is being penalized for playing in the SEC. Put Tennessee in the CUSA and they would be drawing a bid.

It't not quite fair, but Tennessee is mentioned "seventh" in the list of "others receiving votes" in the AP poll, and isn't mentioned at all in the ESPN/USA Today poll or in their list of "others receiving votes"

How could that be. The vols knocked off Memphis and Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, and Oklahoma State. They lost to North Carolina, Ohio State, Butler, Vanderbilt, Mississippi, Kentucky, Auburn, Florida, and South Carolina. As far as losses go, those are pretty good teams.

Clearly Tennessee is being penalized for playing in the SEC, and Memphis is being rewarded for playing in the CUSA - as far as the rankings and the seedings go. The number of losses seem to be very important to the pollsters.

It just goes to show that just because you have a vote in the AP poll doesn't mean you know anything about basketball.

On the other hand, how do you explain the Tigers #6 in the RPI and #7 in Pomeroy. Numbers don't lie.
