USA Today - Report: Tom Penders to resign as coach at Houston

Report: Tom Penders to resign as coach at Houston

The Houston Chronicle reports that after leading his team to a surprise run to the NCAA tournament, Tom Penders will resign as basketball coach at the University of Houston.

The Cougars earned a spot in the NCAA tournament by winning the Conference USA championship when they knocked off top-seeded Texas-El Paso in the conference title game.

In the NCAA tournament, the Cougars lost to Maryland in the first round Friday. The Chronicle reports that Penders had a meeting with athletics director Mack Rhoades Sunday.

When asked for comment, Rhoades said "there will be an announcement regarding the future of the men's basketball program in the near future." In six seasons, Penders has gone 121-77.

One name mentioned by The Chronicle as a possible successor to Penders is former UTEP, Texas A&M, and Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie. Before becoming A.D. at Houston, Rhoades was a senior staffer in UTEP's athletics department when Gillispie was head coach of the Miners.

Gillispie did not coach this season after being fired by Kentucky after a two-year stint in Lexington.
