Barbee keeps the C-USA coaching carousel turning
UTEP Coach Tony Barbee is leaving the Miners for the SEC and Auburn, according to multiple sources. Barbee led UTEP to a 26-7 record overall, 15-1 mark in Conference USA, a C-USA Tournament finals appearance and a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Assuming Derrick Caracter stays in school, which certainly isn’t a lock, whomever inherits that program will be ready to rock and roll.
Here’s a rundown for Conference USA’s coaching musical chairs:
UTEP — Tony Barbee to Auburn; Next coach: ESPN’s Andy Katz mentions Tim Floyd and Billy Gillispie among others.
Memphis — Josh Pastner
UAB — Mike Davis
Marshall — Donnie Jones
Tulsa — Doug Wojcik
Southern Miss — Larry Eustachy
Houston — Tom Penders resigns/retires/fired/forced out; Next coach: USA Today lists John Lucas and Billy Gillispie as front-runners.
Southern Methodist — Matt Doherty
UCF — Kirk Speraw fired; Next coach: The Orlando Sentinel runs through a list of candidates. The Herd’s Donnie Jones is mentioned.
East Carolina — Mack McCarthy out; Jeff Lebo in after leaving door open for Barbee at Auburn.
Tulane — Dave Dickerson
Rice — Ben Braun
