Spurs Assign Darius Washington To Austin Toros
NEW YORK, November 29, 2007 – The San Antonio Spurs have assigned rookie guard Darius Washington to their NBA Development League affiliate, the Austin Toros. Johnson is the 13th NBA player assigned to a D-League affiliate this season.
The Toros also announced the acquisition of guard DerMarr Johnson, a former NBA lottery selection, from the available player pool and waived guard Patrick Fields. Johnson and Washington are expected to be available for Friday night’s game against Sioux Falls.
Washington is the second player (Ian Mahinmi, Nov. 21) the Spurs have assigned to the Toros since the organization purchased the Austin franchise on June 28, 2007.
The 6-2, 195-pound free agent signed with the Spurs on Oct. 1, 2007. Washington averaged 2.8 points, 1.1 rebounds on .485 from the field and 7.5 minutes in 15 games for the Spurs this season.
In two seasons at the University of Memphis, Washington averaged 15.4 points, 3.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds for the Tigers. The Winter Park, Fla. native was named the 2005 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, while also earning All-Conference Third Team honors.
Johnson was selected in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks.
Johnson’s NBA career has included stints with the New York Knicks (2004) and the Denver Nuggets (2004-07). Johnson averaged 3.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 10.7 minutes in 39 games (seven starts) for the Nuggets last season. In 136 NBA games, Johnson compiled averages of 6.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 17.4 minutes.
The guard played one season at the University of Cincinnati, where he was named the 2000 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and earned All-Conference Third Team honors. He averaged 12.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and shot .478 from the field in 32 games for Cincinnati.
