Tiger AD: Contract for Calipari just matter of time
April 4, 2006
INDIANAPOLIS -- The original plan was to have a new contract featuring, among other things, pay increases for John Calipari and his assistants done by the end of last week. And while that hasn't yet been completed, University of Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson reconfirmed Monday it's only a matter of timing. "We've both been so busy we haven't even seen each other, to be honest with you," Johnson said. "But don't read anything into that. It's just a busy time of the year for everybody."
Johnson on Monday remained in Indianapolis -- site of the NCAA Tournament title game between Florida and UCLA -- and said no school (Oklahoma and N.C. State included) has called to request permission to speak with Calipari about a job opening. Meanwhile, Calipari left Indianapolis prior to tip-off Monday and was headed to Los Angeles, where he will be the guest host of Fox Sports Net's "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" tonight and Wednesday. The hour-long show is scheduled to air in Memphis at 10:30 each night.
After that, he is planning to spend the rest of the week recruiting potential Class of 2007 targets like Derrick Rose, a 6-2 point guard from Chicago ranked as the fifth-best prospect in the nation by Scout.com.
