Non-Power Conferences Overlooked by Committee
No. 2 Memphis (30-3)
The Question: Has snacking on Conference-USA cream puffs for three months prepared the Tigers for the NCAAs or fattened up their record?
The Breakdown: After Memphis beat Houston to win the Conference USA Tournament, Tigers Coach John Calipari proudly told reporters: “I do know this. I know that they’re not lining up to play us.”
Few teams would like to be placed across the bracket from Memphis. The Tigers are balanced, athletics and fearless. They’re led by the Chris Douglas-Roberts 15.4 points per game and have much steadier guard play this season since the mercurial Darius Washington left early to play professionally.
They’ve won 22 consecutive games, but still couldn’t get a sniff at a No. 1 seed.
What makes the Tigers so mysterious is that they don’t have any signature wins (Kentucky and Oklahoma are their best ones) and they don’t have any bad losses (Georgia Tech on a neutral floor and Tennessee and Arizona on the road.)
The Verdict: With a good draw and a chip on their shoulders, expect Memphis to be in contention for a Final Four bid.
